5-Year Fire Pump Inspection
Unlike annual inspections, the 5-year fire pump inspection is a comprehensive internal evaluation required by NFPA 25. During this test, technicians open and examine key components to check for wear, corrosion, or blockages that can’t be detected during routine testing. This ensures the pump is not only functional, but capable of sustaining performance over its full service life.

What the 5-Year fire pump inspection Entails

Gauge Inspection
Pressure gauges must be inspected or replaced every 5 years with calibrated gauges. Accurate gauges ensure reliable pressure readings — faulty ones can give misleading results and compromise pump performance.

Driver Test
The fire pump driver — whether electric motor or diesel engine — is tested for reliable startup and smooth operation. Any mechanical or electrical issues are addressed to ensure the pump engages instantly during a fire.

Standpipe Flow Test
A full flow test confirms the fire pump can deliver the water volume and pressure required by NFPA 25. Flow is measured at multiple standpipe outlets to verify system demand can be met during an emergency.

Controller Test
The fire pump controller is tested to verify it automatically starts the pump during a pressure drop, and stops correctly once the fire demand has ended.

Internal Fire Pump Inspection
Technicians disassemble the pump to inspect internal parts such as impellers, bearings, shafts, seals, and packing. This check identifies corrosion, wear, or blockages that cannot be seen during routine testing, helping prevent pump failure.

Relief Valve Inspection
The pressure relief valve is examined to confirm it prevents over-pressurization and protects the pump and piping system from damage.
